are an extradimensional race capable of traveling between dimensions using rifts in the fabric of reality and the space between worlds, as indicated by the Imp Family event text that reads "A tear in the fabric of the universe..". They traveled to the dimension the game is primarily set within, which they referred to as the "White Plane", in an attempt to retrieve an artifact at the behest of their Emperor. Upon arriving in the White Plane their forces wound up trespassing on Petrichor V; Due to the presence of Providence on the planet, this invasion attempt did not go well. The invasion parties were weakened so badly by both Providence and the properties of the planet that they lacked the strength to return to the Red Plane, stranding them on the planet with only the ability to briefly return to the space between the two worlds in order to escape conflicts. They attempted to kill Providence to regain access to the portal between the planes, but it went so badly that they decided they could never attempt it again, instead seeking a way to send a message to their homeworld and call in their Emperor. They did succeed in this endeavor eventually, summoning the Imp Overlord.png Imp OverlordsImp Overlord.pngImp Overlord

and reinforcements to the planet.

Though Providence is dead, the Imps and their Overlords remain on the planet during the events of Risk of Rain 2. It is unclear whether or not they have regained the ability to freely travel back to the Red Plane, nor if they found the artifact they were trying to retrieve, however their continued presence seems to indicate they still have some reason to be on the planet. Considering they indicate a discomfort with the environment, most notably in the form of a foul smell, they either continue to lack the ability to leave, or they still need something from it.

Ever since we've arrived there has been no shortage of nightmares for our party. Long nights and unnaturally regular eclipses have made sunlight scarce and we must, appallingly, resort to risking our lives hunting and devouring the local fauna like lowly beasts. While the air is breathable, it is no blessing; we have been unable to escape the foul smell that we can only now assume is simply a part of the atmosphere on this world. Worst of all, attempts to return through the portal have been unsuccessful in our weakened state. It takes considerable effort to enter [the between space] - and we lack the strength to stay there long enough to cross the membrane. We are stranded.

And then there is the master of this world. Curiously, it is in his presence that we find ourselves most weakened - and when he senses us, he wastes no time in his approach. We've attempted to kill him once in the hopes of restoring our access to the portal, and it ended in such disaster that it became clear there could not be a second attempt. If not for our ability to briefly dive into [the between space] to escape our skirmishes, we would surely all be butchered.

Whenever we can observe him unnoticed, he stands in the open, transfixed by the moon. I find some small humor in that.

Curse this place - and curse its master. May we find a way to send word to the homeworld of our plight -and may the great emperor deign to come forth and grant this "deity" a swift death.

Trivia

  • The artifact the Imps are looking for may be the Artifact of Origin, which did not carry over into the second game. If this is indeed the case, then they likely did manage to recover it.
