Talk:Red Whip

Not all mobility is created equal

"After 5 seconds of using no offensive skills, the holder gets the Whip Boost buff, increasing their movement speed by 30% (+30% per stack) until they use an offensive skill again. "

"As of the 1.0 Launch update, all mobility skills are considered "sprinting," meaning that the buff won't be removed if the player uses such skills."

I'm not sure if this equates "mobility" with "utility" but either way, that change was either reverted, never (fully) in place to begin with or very misleading in it's wording.

Of all skills that could be considered giving mobility in some form, this is true for:

  • both of Commando's utilities
  • both of Huntress' utilities
  • Bandit's Smoke Bomb - even when it damages enemies
  • MUL-T's Transport mode - even when it damages enemies
  • Shadowfade from Strides of Heresy

while it is not true for any of these "mobility" skills, ending Red Whip instantly on activation:

  • both of Huntress' specials, even if the player is only targeting
  • Artificer's Ion Surge
  • Mercenary's Blinding Assault
  • both of Rex's utilities
  • all of Loaders secondaries and utilities + Thunderslam
  • both of Acrid's utilities

So more often than not, activating some sort of mobility skill ironically lowers mobility by ending Red Whip.

Red Whip also ends on these utilities and other, questionably "offensive" skills:

  • Engineer's Bubble Shield, even though it doesn't do damage, procs nothing and is the prime example of a defensive skill
  • Artificer's Snapfreeze
  • all of Captain's utilities and specials, even if they are canceled while targeting

while not ending on these:

  • both of MUL-T's specials
  • Engineer's Thermal Harpoons, even though it's clearly offensive

(not tested: most of Mercenary's abilities and other "offensive" skills that I simply assume do stop Red Whip)

So what do we do with these two sentences? They are partially true and worth mentioning but very inconsistent in what is considered "mobility" or "offensive". I also can't think of a definition that encompasses every case, so maybe just list all skills that do NOT interrupt Red Whip? In Early Access Content Update 5, they specifically mentioned mobility skills are now considered sprinting but never specified which ones were mobility and which ones weren't. I think if there were two bullet points that covered the cases that keep whip buff and didn't keep whip buff like Naturopath, that would be a good way to clear up the confusion. The two sentences can remain but just add which clarifying cases do what below them. Sylphoid (talk) 23:58, 13 August 2021 (UTC)
